Our Executive Director, Fabio Bargiacchi, was honored to participate in the 14th Meeting of the Special Envoys for the Sahel.
The meeting brought together the Special Representative for the EU for the Sahel, Prof. Emanuela C. Del Re, and the Ambassadors and Representatives from the EU Member States. Together with Prof. Del Re, the opening ceremony saw the participation of Ambassadeur Jeroen Cooreman and Heidy Rombouts from Belgium.
Ambassadors from different EU Member States (Italy, Germany, France, Luxemburg, Austria, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and others), Sahel countries, the World Bank, EU Institutions, UN representatives, and various Regional Organizations, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), participated in the meeting.
Our Executive Director had the privilege to read a message from Prof. Romano Prodi, (the Former President of the EU Commission, Former UN Special Envoy for the Sahel, and twice Prime Minister of Italy) with whom ECES collaborates also via his Special Advisor for Africa, Piero Scarpellini, who is as well a member of our Strategic and Advisory Committee.
ECES has an extensive experience in the West Africa and Sahel regions. This is via activities implemented since 2010 and funded by the EU and its Member States in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Benin, Togo, and Ivory Coast also in the framework of the ongoing continental collaboration with the African Union, funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The partnership focuses on electoral integrity and preventing conflicts, especially in including and mainstreaming the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. In addition, ECES played an essential role in the meeting thanks to the cooperation established with the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) and the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC).
